Ecolab Inc., a global sustainability leader, has achieved a significant milestone by sourcing 100% of its electricity for European operations from renewable sources. This accomplishment stems from the successful completion of a windfarm project in partnership with Low Carbon, a global renewable energy company.
Windfarm Development Collaboration
In 2022, Ecolab initiated a collaboration with Low Carbon to develop the Mörknässkogen windfarm, situated near Vaasa on the west coast of Finland. Now operational, the windfarm boasts a capacity of 30MW, generating approximately 100GWh of clean electricity annually. This energy output is equivalent to powering 30,000 homes and avoiding 20,000 tonnes of CO2e emissions per year.
Renewable Electricity Coverage
By harnessing power from the windfarm, Ecolab extends renewable electricity coverage to all its European sites, including major offices, manufacturing facilities, and research centers. This achievement elevates the company’s global renewable electricity sourcing level to 80%, aligning with its commitment to achieve 100% renewable electricity globally by 2030.
Christophe Beck, Chairman, and CEO of Ecolab, emphasized the significance of sustainable practices in achieving both financial and environmental goals. Beck highlighted the role of renewable energy in powering operations and transitioning the company’s vehicle fleet to electric, contributing to long-term growth and sustainability objectives.
Commitment to Renewable Energy
John Isherwood, Managing Director at Low Carbon, expressed delight at the operational commencement of the Finnish wind project, underscoring the shared vision for a renewable-powered world. The 10-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Ecolab underscores the commitment to sustainable energy and contributes to Finland’s clean energy supply.
Ecolab’s pursuit of renewable energy extends beyond Europe, with previous achievements in North America. The company reached 100% renewable electricity in 2020 through investments in wind and solar projects, aligning with its broader sustainability initiatives.
Advancing Sustainability Goals
Ecolab’s focus on virtual Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) facilitates the transition to electric vehicles and accelerates efforts to achieve renewable electricity targets by 2030. These initiatives position Ecolab ahead of global guidelines outlined by RE100, a corporate initiative dedicated to achieving 100% renewable electricity.
