The City of Davis has made a significant advancement in its green energy policies by installing a PairTree™ microgrid solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging station from Paired Power. This installation, located in the Boy Scout Parking Lot at 616 First Street, is the first of its kind in the Sacramento region.
Innovative Solar Technology
The PairTree™ charger, the flagship product of Paired Power, offers a Level 2 charging rate of up to 7.7 kW for one EV or 4 kW per vehicle for two EVs. This technology is compatible with all major EV and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) models. The solar-powered charger significantly reduces construction time and costs compared to traditional fixed chargers.
“The City chose PairTree because of its quick-to-install solution that greatly lessens construction time and costs,” said Mayor Josh Chapman. “This location is ideal because it is right off Interstate 80 and in the heart of downtown. We encourage anyone using the chargers to explore our downtown and all it has to offer.”
Benefits of Solar-Powered EV Charging
The PairTree™ charger provides resilient, fully solar-powered EV charging that operates regardless of grid availability. Paired Power CEO Tom McCalmont highlighted the environmental benefits: “Our stations deliver reliable solar power to serve communities focused on a cleaner, safer environment.”
The EV chargers are currently available to all users at no cost. Charging is simple: plug in to start and unplug to stop. The City collects aggregated data about sessions and usage for sustainability reports without collecting personal information.
Future Developments
The Boy Scout parking lot has a two-hour time limit for parking, including EV and accessible spaces. Re-plugging in after the two-hour limit will prohibit additional charging. The City also plans to install another PairTree™ EV charger at Playfields Park in fall 2024.
All project costs are fully funded by the City of Davis’ share of the Electrify Yolo grant. This regional project includes Yolo County, Valley Clean Energy Alliance (VCE), and the City of Woodland, funded under a 2018 SACOG Green Region grant. Davis’ share is approximately $2 million of the total grant. Phase 1 includes planning efforts for EV charging infrastructure, installation of Level 2 and Level 3 (DC Fast) Chargers, purchase of an electric vehicle, and mobile chargers.
About Paired Power
Paired Power, trusted by cities, governments, and leading corporations, manufactures solar-powered microgrid electric vehicle charger facilities (EVCF). Their flagship product, PairTree™, pairs a 4.6 kW solar array with a 42.4 kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) to provide Level 2 EV charging day or night. This innovative solar technology supports rapid deployment of new EV infrastructure without requiring expansions of existing grid capacity.
