In a notable move towards sustainable energy, Ciego de Avila province is commencing the construction of its fourth solar power plant. With an expected contribution of 4 MW, this new addition bolsters the province’s commitment to solar energy, aligning with global trends in renewable power generation.
Generous Chinese Support Fuels Solar Advancements
This solar initiative receives backing from the People’s Republic of China, marking a collaborative effort between various entities. The donation echoes similar contributions facilitating solar plants in other Cuban provinces like Holguín and Villa Clara.
Impactful Journey of Existing Solar Plants
The three operational solar plants in Ciego de Avila have proven impactful. In 2023 alone, they generated an impressive 16,372.35 MW/H, resulting in significant energy savings. Notably, this also prevented the emission of over 13,000 tons of carbon dioxide and saved 4,256.79 tons of fuel.
Beyond Energy: Community Benefits
In addition to environmental gains, solar power projects, like the one in Ciego de Avila, extend their benefits to communities. The international project “Energy for All” facilitated electricity access to 167 homes in rural areas affected by Hurricane Irma in 2017.
Cuba’s Renewable Energy Aspirations
Cuba aims to diversify its energy sources as part of a national strategy. Currently heavily reliant on fossil fuels for 95% of its electricity, the country is working towards a 29% share from renewable sources by 2030.
