Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners Initiates Construction on 1,000 MWh Battery Storage Project

A Milestone in Energy Storage

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) has officially greenlit a 500 MW / 1,000 MWh energy storage project in Coalburn, Scotland, marking one of Europe’s largest installations.

Partnership and Expansion Plans

Developed in collaboration with Alcemi, this facility is part of a larger initiative to deploy 4 GW of energy storage assets in the UK. CIP aims to decide on two additional projects in 2024, exceeding a combined capacity of 1 GW.

Sustainable and Balancing Impact

The Coalburn 1 project prioritizes environmental conservation with landscaping, peat reserve maintenance, and biodiversity promotion. Beyond reducing CO2 emissions, it will enhance the UK’s power system by providing balancing services during peak demand, reducing costs for end consumers.

Canadian Solar’s proprietary energy storage solution, SolBank, will be deployed by e-STORAGE, while H&MV Engineering handles balance of plant works. SSE Energy Markets is enlisted for project optimization services.
