Consumers Energy Boosts Support for Low-Income Michigan Households

$600 Million Plan to Enhance Energy Efficiency

Consumers Energy has received the green light for its ambitious $600 million energy efficiency initiative aimed at aiding Michigan’s low-income families. Approved by the Michigan Public Service Commission, this plan promises to amplify efforts in reducing energy consumption and lowering utility bills for vulnerable communities over the next two years.

Focused on Sustainable and Equitable Energy Solutions

This significant move aligns with Consumers Energy’s Clean Energy Plan, emphasizing the reduction of energy waste in both residential and commercial settings. Since 2009, the utility has already saved its customers a staggering $5.5 billion through its energy efficiency programs, benefiting nearly 200,000 low-income households by making their living spaces more energy-efficient and affordable.

“Ensuring the well-being of all our customers and communities is our top priority,” stated Angela Thompkins, Consumers Energy’s chief diversity officer. “This plan will unlock additional savings and specifically cater to the historically underserved sectors, ensuring broader access to sustainable energy solutions.”

Plan Highlights

  • Increased support for low-income customers through a diverse range of energy efficiency programs.
  • Enhanced investment in programs for income-qualified single-family and multi-family homes.
  • Improved coordination for customers enrolled in both energy assistance and efficiency initiatives.
  • Special initiatives targeting disadvantaged communities for broader outreach.
  • Doubling the investment in the Income Qualified Health & Safety Program, which funds necessary repairs for energy efficiency improvements and promotes better air quality and health benefits.
  • Expansion of focused efforts in Flint and other high-need communities to increase enrollment in energy efficiency programs.

“We’re committed to breaking down barriers to economic success and energy accessibility,” Thompkins added. “Our ongoing dialogue with customers will further our mission to positively impact more lives.”

As Michigan’s largest energy provider, Consumers Energy serves over 6.7 million residents across the Lower Peninsula, reinforcing its commitment to a clean, efficient, and equitable energy future. For more details on Consumers Energy’s initiatives, visit ConsumersEnergy.com.
