Major Milestone in Clean Energy Transition
Consumers Energy has announced a significant agreement to add 100 megawatts (MW) of battery storage to its clean energy portfolio. This partnership with Jupiter Power marks a key step toward achieving 550 MW of storage capacity by 2040.
Advancing the Clean Energy Plan
Battery storage is crucial to Consumers Energy’s Clean Energy Plan. “Battery storage improves efficiency and boosts reliability during our transition from coal to renewable sources like solar and wind,” said David Hicks, vice president of clean energy development at Consumers Energy. This collaboration with Jupiter Power aligns with the company’s ambitious clean energy goals.
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) capture and distribute energy from renewables such as solar and wind. They enhance energy capture, reduce electricity costs, and ensure a reliable grid. BESS, combined with energy efficiency improvements, demand response, and grid modernization, accelerates the transition to renewable energy without compromising affordability or reliability.
Jupiter Power’s Role and Investment
Sam Malin, Jupiter’s Vice President of Origination, expressed enthusiasm: “Jupiter is thrilled to provide Consumers with cost-competitive energy storage solutions that support their clean energy goals.” Jupiter’s 100MW power purchase agreement represents a substantial investment in Michigan’s renewable energy infrastructure. This project complements the state’s existing wind, solar, and traditional resources, ensuring reliable power.
Consumers Energy plans to develop 75 MW of its own storage by 2027. The new facility, built with Jupiter Power in Coldwater, will join other operational storage systems in Kalamazoo, Cadillac, Grand Rapids, and Standish. This expansion reflects the growing importance of energy storage in the solar energy market and broader energy market trends.
Commitment to Renewable Energy
Consumers Energy, Michigan’s largest energy provider, serves 6.8 million residents across 68 Lower Peninsula counties. Its Clean Energy Plan aims to eliminate coal as an energy source by 2025, achieve net-zero carbon emissions, and meet 90 percent of customers’ energy needs through clean sources, including wind and solar.
Jupiter Power, a leading energy storage infrastructure platform, develops over 11,000 MW of projects nationwide. With offices in Austin, Houston, and Chicago, Jupiter leverages its expertise in trading, analytics, development, finance, operations, and construction to optimize dispatch and support green energy policies.
This partnership between Consumers Energy and Jupiter Power exemplifies the drive towards sustainable energy solutions, highlighting advancements in solar technology, energy storage, and the broader solar market analysis.
