China’s electricity consumption, a pivotal indicator of economic vitality, witnessed substantial growth in March 2024, as per official data released on Wednesday.
March Surge in Power Consumption
The National Energy Administration disclosed a remarkable 7.4% year-on-year surge in power usage, reaching 794.2 billion kilowatt-hours in March.
Notably, primary and secondary industries experienced a 7% and 4.9% increase in power consumption, respectively, signaling industrial resilience. Meanwhile, the tertiary sector exhibited robust growth, with a notable 11.6% rise in power consumption.
Residential Sector Leads Growth
March showcased a significant uptick in residential power consumption, recording an impressive 15.8% surge compared to the same period last year. This surge reflects increased domestic activity and household energy demand.

The first quarter of 2024 witnessed a commendable 9.8% increase in China’s power usage, totaling nearly 2.34 trillion kilowatt-hours.
