Strengthening Ties: China and Arab Countries Pioneer Renewable Energy Cooperation
In a pivotal move towards global sustainability, China and Arab nations are intensifying their collaboration on renewable energy development, according to An Fengquan, deputy head of the National Energy Administration’s International Cooperation Department. This announcement comes on the sidelines of the COP28 United Nations climate change conference in Dubai.
Impressive Milestones: China’s Leading Role in Renewable Energy
China stands at the forefront of renewable energy capacities globally, with hydropower, wind, solar, and biomass capacities consistently topping global charts. An reported a 20.8% surge in China’s renewable energy capacity, reaching a record 1.4 billion kilowatts by October, constituting 49.9% of the total installed capacity.
The nation’s prowess extends to manufacturing, with approximately half of the world’s wind-power equipment and 80% of solar photovoltaic equipment originating from China. As a significant player, China is set to propel global renewable energy initiatives.
Collaborative Initiatives and Promising Projects
An emphasized existing collaborations between China and Arab countries in renewable energy development. The National Energy Administration has inked hydrogen development cooperation agreements with Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Noteworthy investments by Chinese companies, such as the State Power Investment Corporation Limited and China Three Gorges Cooperation, underscore the commitment to sustainable practices.
Construction is underway for the 700-megawatt Ar Rass solar PV plant and the 91-MW Layla solar plant in Saudi Arabia, with partial investments from the State Power Investment Corporation Limited. Anticipated to commence operations by late 2024, these projects are poised to generate over 2.1 billion kilowatt-hours of clean electricity annually, meeting the needs of 80,000 households and reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 1.968 million metric tons yearly.
The joint strides made by China and Arab countries signify a monumental leap towards a greener, more sustainable energy landscape, fostering global cooperation for a cleaner future.
