Chandigarh Boosts Green Energy: Two New Solar Plants to Illuminate Sector 39

CREST’s Green Initiative

In a move to amplify green energy, the Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science & Technology Promotion Society (CREST) is initiating the installation of two additional floating solar photovoltaic (SPV) power plants in Sector 39.

Increased Solar Capacity

Each plant, with a capacity of 1.5 MWp, will be strategically placed on storage tanks 5 and 6 at the Sector 39 waterworks, contributing to a total capacity of 3 MWp. The project, costing nearly Rs 17.80 crore, includes a 10-year operations and maintenance (O&M) plan.

Chandigarh’s Commitment to Sustainability

These developments follow the success of North India’s largest floating solar project (2MWp) commissioned last year at the Sector 39 waterworks. With a minimum annual solar energy output of 35 lakh units, Chandigarh aims to further enhance its renewable energy portfolio and contribute to a sustainable future.

Despite falling short of the ambitious 75 MWp renewable energy target by December 31 last year, the Administration remains dedicated. Currently generating 63.59 MWp from various solar projects, the city plans to add 25MWp in the 2024-25 fiscal year, emphasizing its commitment to a greener future.
