The Union Cabinet’s green signal for the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana marks a pivotal moment in India’s solar journey, bringing solar energy to one crore households. With a substantial allocation of Rs 75,021 crore, this initiative is poised to revolutionize the adoption of rooftop solar panels across the nation.
Free Electricity and Financial Support
Beneficiaries under this groundbreaking scheme will relish the perks of free electricity up to 300 units per month. Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur highlighted the scheme’s central financial assistance, covering 60% of the system cost for 2kW systems and 40% of the additional cost for systems ranging from 2kW to 3kW.
Financial Incentives and Subsidies Galore
Official sources reveal that financial assistance will be capped at 3kW, resulting in substantial subsidies—Rs 30,000 for a 1kW system, Rs 60,000 for 2kW, and Rs 78,000 for 3kW systems or higher. The scheme encourages households to apply for subsidies through a national portal, facilitating their choice of suitable vendors for rooftop solar panel installations.
Model Solar Villages and Incentivizing Change
The initiative extends beyond individual households, envisioning the development of model solar villages in each district—a beacon for rural solar adoption. Urban local bodies and Panchayati Raj institutions stand to gain incentives for fostering rooftop solar installations in their areas. The scheme earmarks funds for innovative projects in rooftop solar installations and ensures payment security for renewable energy service company-based models.
Commitment to Sustainable Agriculture
In another significant move, the government allocates a substantial subsidy of Rs 24,420 crore on phosphatic and potassic (P&K) fertilisers for the upcoming kharif season, reaffirming its dedication to supporting farmers and ensuring affordable access to vital nutrients.
