Brazil Achieves Solar Milestone: Surpasses Wind in National Energy Mix with 34.9 GW Capacity

Brazil’s solar capacity hits 34.9 GW, surpassing wind in national energy mix

Solar Dominance in Energy Mix

New statistics released by Absolar reveal that Brazil’s solar capacity reached an impressive 34.9 GW in October, surpassing wind power and claiming a substantial 15.8% share of the nation’s total generation capacity.

Hydroelectric Shift and Current Capacity Breakdown

Once constituting over 80% of Brazil’s generating capacity, hydroelectric plants now represent 49% of the total. The recent statistics, gathered by Absolar until Nov. 14, highlight a significant shift in the country’s energy landscape. The solar capacity is divided into 10.1 GW of centralized solar generating capacity and 24.7 GW of distributed-generation capacity.

Yearly Installations and Regulatory Insights

Developers have successfully installed 9.8 GW of solar throughout the year, showcasing the robust growth of the solar sector. This comprises 3.3 GW of centralized capacity and 6.5 GW of distributed-generation capacity, according to data from Brazilian regulator Aneel. The figures underscore Brazil’s commitment to diversifying its energy sources and embracing sustainable practices.

This notable achievement positions Brazil as a leader in the adoption of solar energy, contributing significantly to the country’s renewable energy goals. As solar continues to gain prominence, these statistics signify a pivotal moment in Brazil’s transition to a more sustainable and diversified energy landscape.
