BHP’s CEO, Mike Henry, at the China Development Forum, emphasized China’s pivotal role in the global shift towards a clean energy future. He applauded China for its leadership in opening up to the world, highlighting the significance of international collaboration in achieving sustainable development goals. China’s substantial investments in clean energy sectors, which saw a remarkable 24% increase to $676 billion in 2023, underscore its commitment to driving economic growth through green technology.
The Economic Shift to Green Technology
China’s strategic focus on the “new three” — solar panels, electric vehicles, and lithium-ion batteries — marks a significant move towards embracing technology essential for green development. This transition not only opens up numerous economic opportunities but also places China at the forefront of technological innovation in the energy sector.
Henry discussed the unique position of China’s steel industry, noting its state-of-the-art blast furnace facilities, which are less energy and carbon-intensive than their global counterparts. Despite the lower availability of scrap compared to Europe, Chinese steelmakers are fervently pursuing decarbonization strategies, including hydrogen injection and carbon capture, utilization, and storage technologies.
The Growing Demand for Mining Assets
The energy transition has accelerated the demand for essential metals and minerals, such as copper and iron ore, emphasizing the need for sustainable and efficient mining practices. Luo Zuoxian from the Sinopec Economics and Development Research Institute highlighted the increasing investments and cooperation in the mining sector in China, aiming to support carbon reduction efforts from material sourcing to production.
Henry also pointed out the critical need for companies with the financial, technical, and operational capabilities to meet the growing demand for metals and minerals in more sustainable ways. BHP’s commitment to supporting Chinese steelmakers through partnerships reflects its dedication to contributing to the global clean energy transition and sustainable development.
