Australia’s Solar Manufacturing Roadmap Unveiled

ARENA-Backed Initiative

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) is championing a domestic solar manufacturing push with its support for an industry roadmap. Titled ‘Silicon 2 Solar,’ the roadmap, developed by the Australian Photovoltaic Institute (APVI) in collaboration with Deloitte and key industry stakeholders, charts a credible course for Australia to establish robust solar PV supply chains.

Comprehensive Supply Chain Strategy

The roadmap delves into detailed technoeconomic analyses, highlighting key stages in the solar PV supply chain, encompassing polysilicon production, ingot and wafer manufacturing, and solar cell and module production. Despite challenges in each stage, the roadmap asserts Australia’s capacity to thrive in solar manufacturing.

Focus on Crystalline Silicon Technology

Prioritizing crystalline silicon solar cells, Australia aims to manufacture current leading solar PV technology while keeping an eye on potential future advancements. Acknowledging Australia’s significant role in solar PV research and development, the roadmap emphasizes the need for domestic manufacturing to support the country’s growing solar PV installations.

Reducing Reliance and Mitigating Risks

As Australia intensifies solar PV installations, the roadmap underscores the importance of establishing reliable and diversified supply sources. By contributing to global supply chains, Australia aims to reduce risks associated with its energy transformation goals and actively participate in the world’s net-zero ambitions.

ARENA CEO Darren Miller expressed confidence in Australia’s ability to manufacture cutting-edge solar technology, emphasizing the enormous opportunity it presents for the nation’s clean energy economy. The roadmap, he added, provides a clear vision and policy framework for realizing ambitious plans of local solar PV manufacturing at scale.
