In a historic achievement, solar and wind power in Australia have exceeded total household electricity consumption in 2021-22, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
Record-Breaking Energy Output
Luisa Ryan, ABS Head of Environment Statistics, reported a groundbreaking development, citing the unprecedented scenario where solar and wind production outpaced total household energy demands.
Shifting Energy Dynamics and Consumption Patterns
While long-term trends persist, emerging behaviors reveal reduced energy use in manufacturing, aligning with an ongoing pattern. Household energy consumption, on the other hand, continues to decline since its peak in 2016-17.
Factors Influencing Energy Decline
Ms. Ryan attributes the drop in household energy use in 2021-22 to decreased petrol and diesel consumption. Transport industry energy demands surged, particularly in air travel, following the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.
Impact on Energy Exports
Energy exports saw a notable shift, with black coal exports declining by 1.3% in 2021-22. However, this decrease was compensated by a 7.5% increase in Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) exports.
