Assam’s Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, unveils ambitious plans to fortify the state’s solar power infrastructure, aligning with India’s green energy aspirations. Sarma emphasizes solar energy’s pivotal role in India’s global renewable energy dominance, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on solar power initiatives.
Government Subsidies Propel Solar Adoption
Under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijlee Yojna, applicants for solar panels are entitled to subsidies from both the Central and Assam governments. For every 1 KW installation, a subsidy of ₹30,000 from the Central government, supplemented by an additional ₹15,000 from the Assam government, is provided, with the applicant contributing ₹5,000. Subsidies increase proportionally for 2 KW and 3 KW installations, ensuring affordability across income groups.
Addressing Energy Needs with Solar Solutions
With Assam requiring 2,200 MW of power to meet household electricity demands, solar energy initiatives emerge as a strategic solution. The state’s solar policy, initiated in 2017, laid the foundation for ambitious energy generation targets. Notably, the implementation of Assam’s first floating solar power plant in Thanagarh village underscores the state’s commitment to harnessing natural resources for enhanced electricity production.
Milestones in Solar Power Expansion
The inauguration of Assam’s largest solar power plant in Amguri town, boasting a capacity of 70 MW and located in Sivsagar district, marks a significant milestone in the region’s renewable energy journey. This venture signifies Assam’s progress towards establishing itself as a frontrunner in sustainable energy initiatives.
