In a strategic collaboration, Arnergy, a Nigerian CleanTech company, has joined forces with Momas Electricity Meters Manufacturing Company Limited (MEMMCOL) to implement a cutting-edge lithium-based battery energy storage system (BESS) for the Lower Usuma Dam Water Treatment Plant (LUDWTP) in Abuja.
Addressing Power Challenges
The Abuja FCT Water Board (FCTWB), facing issues with power generation assets utilization and dependence on volatile fossil fuels, sought a reliable and integrated mega power system for the Lower Usuma Dam Water Treatment Plant. The goal was to ensure uninterrupted operations, optimize power use, and eliminate reliance on fossil fuels.
Optimal Power Solution
Arnergy, in collaboration with MEMMCOL (BDP), delivered a 500kVA Utility-BESS power system with a 0.54MWh lithium-based BESS for LUDWTP. The innovative power solution transformed the existing 1MWp grid-tied system into an interactive AC-coupled architecture, providing 540kWh of energy storage capacity. The result was 24-hour power availability, reduced expenses, and a sophisticated power control system enabling seamless transitions between Grid-Following and Grid-Forming operations.
Project Background
In 2017, the Japanese government, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), partnered with Abuja FCT Water Board and the Federal Ministry of Power to deploy a 1.2MWp grid-connected Solar PV system at the Lower Usuma Water Dam. Arnergy, as the Technical Partner to MEMMCOL, played a pivotal role in implementing the project design and installations.
Advancing Nigeria’s Energy Transition
With the successful completion of this renewable energy transition project, Arnergy and MEMMCOL (BDP) contribute to Nigeria’s sustainable infrastructure development, aligning with national economic goals and supporting SDG 7 for universal energy access and environmental sustainability.
Arnergy specializes in providing modular, scalable, and reliable energy solutions to businesses and households, fostering energy access and digital inclusion in Africa. MEMMCOL, driven by technology-driven solutions, stands as a pioneer in the power sector, offering intelligent and innovative services with a focus on research and development. This collaboration signifies a significant step towards a greener climate and a more sustainable energy landscape in Nigeria.
