Hawaiian Electric Company has awarded Ameresco, Inc. the contract for the proposed ‘Ūkiu Energy 40-megawatt (MW) renewable energy site in Maui. This initiative aligns with Hawaii’s commitment to achieving 100% renewable electricity and carbon neutrality by 2045.
Advancing Clean Energy Goals
The ‘Ūkiu Energy facility will feature a biofuel-powered generator with six dual-fuel engines, ensuring firm renewable energy and providing flexible capacity. It aims to enhance grid reliability, support the integration of intermittent renewable resources, and contribute to power quality. In case of a power outage, it can be brought online in black start mode to help repower the grid.

Project Details
The ‘Ūkiu Energy project is part of Hawaiian Electric Company’s clean energy procurements to reduce Hawaii’s reliance on imported oil. Once the contract is finalized, it will undergo review and approval by the Public Utilities Commission. Upon approval, Ameresco will build, own, and operate the facility, connecting it to the Maui electrical grid at the new Hawaiian Electric Waena substation.
This marks Ameresco’s fourth award with Hawaiian Electric, following the success of Kūpono Solar, Puuloa Energy, and Puuloa Solar, showcasing their commitment to clean energy solutions.
