Ameresco to Build 50MW Battery Energy Storage System for Silicon Valley Power”

Advancing Energy Solutions in Silicon Valley

Ameresco, Inc. (NYSE: AMRC), a leading cleantech integrator, is set to construct a state-of-the-art 50-megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system (BESS) named Kifer Energy Storage LLC for Silicon Valley Power (SVP). This innovative project aims to enhance local area capacity, ensuring electrical system reliability and flexibility.

Key Project Details

The BESS is scheduled to commence construction in mid-2024, signifying the beginning of a 25-year lease and Energy Storage Agreement between Ameresco and the City of Santa Clara. Ameresco will oversee the development, ownership, and operation of the BESS, while SVP will supply the charging energy. With a maximum capacity of 200 megawatt-hours (MWh), the BESS will efficiently utilize surplus renewable electricity, supporting renewable integration and reducing reliance on gas-fired generation.

Strategic Environmental Impact

The project, located adjacent to the existing Kifer Receiving Station within SVP’s service territory, aligns with Silicon Valley Power’s commitment to reliable and flexible power solutions. It also aims to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and criteria air pollutants, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.

Community Collaboration for Sustainable Energy

Expressing excitement about the partnership, Manuel Pineda, Chief Electric Utility Officer of Silicon Valley Power, stated, “This new battery storage system aligns with our mission to deliver affordable, sustainable, and environmentally friendly energy options.” The collaboration between Ameresco and SVP seeks to lead the way toward a greener Silicon Valley.

Market Participation and Operational Timeline

The batteries at the facility will participate in the California ISO markets, assisting in balancing generation and consumption, reducing congestion, and regulating voltage and frequency. Ameresco and SVP aim to have the BESS fully operational by the fourth quarter of 2025.
