Ameresco, Inc., a leading cleantech integrator, in partnership with the City of Somersworth, has officially broken ground on New Hampshire’s first landfill solar energy project located on a Superfund site. This landmark solar photovoltaic (PV) installation marks a significant stride in the city’s renewable energy efforts, repurposing otherwise unusable land into a valuable asset for green energy production.
Pioneering Solar Energy Developments in Somersworth
The solar PV project, with a capacity of 2,577 kW-DC / 1,992 kW-AC, is projected to generate 3,523,443 kWh of electricity in its first year. Over the next 20 years, this solar energy installation is expected to produce over 67 million kWh, avoiding 2,461 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually. This reduction is equivalent to powering 486 homes, removing 586 gas-powered vehicles from the road, or the carbon sequestration of 2,874 acres of U.S. forests annually.
Mayor Matt Gerding of Somersworth emphasized the project’s alignment with the city’s commitment to sustainability. “This solar project is a crucial step in advancing our community’s sustainability initiatives. It reflects our dedication to green energy, transforming city-owned land that had limited use into a renewable energy hub,” Gerding stated. He also expressed gratitude to Ameresco, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NH DES) for their collaboration in making this solar energy project a reality.
Solar Energy Market and Green Energy Policies Drive Progress
The energy generated by this project will be sold to the City of Somersworth through New Hampshire’s group net metering program. This initiative will provide the city with a steady lease income and a Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT), furthering the economic benefits of this solar energy investment. With all necessary permits and approvals secured, construction is set to begin in mid to late August.
Jon Mancini, Senior Vice President of Ameresco, highlighted the innovative nature of the project. “Partnering with Somersworth on this landfill solar project demonstrates the potential of repurposing land for renewable energy. We’re excited to contribute to the city’s clean energy future,” Mancini noted.
A Commitment to Renewable Energy and Sustainability
The groundbreaking ceremony, attended by Congressman Chris Pappas, Mayor Gerding, and key representatives from the EPA, NH DES, and Ameresco, underscores the collaborative effort behind this groundbreaking solar energy development. This project not only represents a milestone for Somersworth but also sets a precedent for other communities looking to enhance their sustainability through innovative energy storage solutions.
As a leading cleantech integrator, Ameresco continues to drive energy market trends by developing sustainable energy solutions. Their expertise in energy efficiency and renewable energy underscores their role in helping communities like Somersworth achieve their green energy goals and contribute to a more sustainable future.
