In a recent announcement, Adani Green Energy proudly revealed its achievement of being ranked second globally among the world’s large-scale solar PV developers in a report by Mercom Capital. Mercom Capital’s report, covering data from July 2022 to June 2023, utilized specific criteria to compile rankings for large-scale solar developers. The assessment included developers with projects in at least two countries, considering operational capacity, projects under construction, and those with awarded Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) contracts. The focus was on large-scale projects with a capacity of 1 MW or more.
Global Ranking and Key Players
TotalEnergies, based in France, secured the top spot globally with a total capacity of 41.3 GW, encompassing operational, under-construction, and awarded projects. Adani Green Energy claimed the second position with an impressive 18.1 GW, followed by Brookfield Renewable Partners from Canada with 18 GW.
Adani’s Ambitious Goals
Gautam Adani emphasized the significance of the ranking, stating that it underscores their commitment as one of the fastest-growing renewable energy players globally. He highlighted the company’s ambitious goal of achieving a renewable energy capacity of 45 GW by 2030.
Global Distribution of Top Developers
Mercom Capital’s report indicated that among the top global solar developers, six were based in Europe, three in North America, and one in South Asia. The project portfolios of these top developers were primarily located in North America, followed by the Asia Pacific region.
TotalEnergies Dominance in Under-Construction and Awarded Capacities
TotalEnergies not only led in the overall capacity but also dominated in under-construction and awarded capacities, boasting 29.3 GW of projects. Brookfield Renewable Partners secured the second position with 13.6 GW, and Adani Green Energy followed closely with 11.1 GW.
Industry Transition Towards Solar
Mercom Capital Group CEO Raj Prabhu noted that the report highlighted several new companies, predominantly led by European developers, actively transitioning towards solar and other renewable energy sources. The evolving landscape of the renewable energy sector is becoming more globalized, with leaders emerging from various regions.

Adani Green Energy, leveraging long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with central and state government entities, has expanded its presence across 12 states in India. With a portfolio of 54 operational projects and 12 projects under construction, AGEL is actively contributing to India’s renewable energy journey, deploying the latest technologies in its projects.
