ABP and SSE Renewables to Build 2GW Nature-Inclusive Wind Farm in North Sea

Major Renewable Energy Project to Enhance Biodiversity

ABP, the Dutch civil service scheme, and Scottish renewable energy developer SSE Renewables have secured a government tender to build the largest wind farm in the Netherlands. The 2GW project, named Noordzeker, will be located 62 km off the Dutch port of IJmuiden and aims to cover 8% of the Netherlands’ electricity consumption.

Strategic Partnership and Investment Goals

ABP first announced its bid in November 2022, later partnering with SSE Renewables to pursue the ambitious project. This bid aligns with ABP’s goal to invest €30 billion in the energy transition by 2030. In 2021, ABP committed to divesting from fossil fuels, underscoring its dedication to sustainable energy.

The joint venture will pay the Dutch government €1 million annually over a 40-year period. This investment will ensure the project’s longevity and contribute significantly to the Netherlands’ renewable energy market.

Commitment to Biodiversity and Ecological Standards

ABP and SSE Renewables will collaborate with Naturalis Biodiversity Centre during the construction and operation of the wind farm. Naturalis will monitor and enhance biodiversity around the project. Initiatives include building artificial reefs, switching off turbines to protect birds, and removing sea waste with autonomous boats.

Harmen van Wijnen, president of ABP, stated, “With Noordzeker, we aim to exploit a large wind farm in the North Sea. Together with Naturalis, we want to set higher ecological standards for wind farm development, construction, and management.”

Additional Developments in the North Sea

In a parallel development, Danish investor Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and Swedish energy firm Vattenfall won a second tender for another 2GW wind farm as part of the IJmuiden Ver project. This wind farm will include a 50MW floating offshore solar farm and a new electrolyser at the Port of Rotterdam, converting electricity generated by the project to green hydrogen. CIP and Vattenfall will pay an annual fee of €20 million to exploit this wind farm.

Impact on the Renewable Energy Market

These projects represent significant investments in the renewable energy sector. They highlight the growing trend of integrating green energy policies and advanced solar technology into large-scale projects. The Noordzeker wind farm, with its focus on biodiversity, sets a new benchmark for sustainable energy developments.

Both projects are pivotal in advancing the Netherlands’ position in the global solar energy market. They demonstrate a commitment to sustainable energy investment and innovative energy storage solutions. By embracing these developments, the Netherlands continues to lead in the transition to clean energy and the broader adoption of renewable energy technologies.

ABP and SSE Renewables’ partnership, alongside CIP and Vattenfall’s initiatives, marks a significant step forward in meeting energy market trends and fulfilling the increasing demand for clean energy solutions.
