The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) recently held a workshop in Abuja, marking the conclusion of two important studies on large-scale solar energy: the Variable Renewable Energy (VRE) Integration Study and the Solar Auction Framework Study. These studies were carried out in collaboration with the World Bank, the Federal Ministry of Power, and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). Their findings are set to support Nigeria’s first-ever utility-scale solar auction.
VRE Integration Study Highlights Solar Potential
The workshop brought together key stakeholders, including government officials, energy experts, and representatives from the World Bank. The VRE Integration Study explored the potential of integrating large-scale solar power into Nigeria’s national grid. The findings underscore solar energy’s capacity to significantly boost Nigeria’s electricity supply while addressing challenges such as grid stability.
Framework for Nigeria’s First Grid-scale Solar Auction
NERC also showcased the Solar Auction Framework Study, which outlines a detailed roadmap for Nigeria’s inaugural grid-scale solar auction. The framework includes criteria for project selection, financial models, and regulatory guidelines, aiming to ensure a transparent and competitive bidding process. The successful implementation of these studies is expected to play a vital role in meeting Nigeria’s renewable energy targets and enhancing its power sector’s sustainability.
