Global Call for Equitable Solar Energy Investment

Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the need for democratizing solar manufacturing and technology during his virtual address at the inaugural International Solar Festival 2024. Hosted by the International Solar Alliance (ISA) on September 5-6, the event saw global leaders rallying to expand solar energy adoption, particularly in developing nations.

India’s Role and Commitment

As a co-founder of the ISA, India pledges to lead collaborative efforts towards a sustainable and inclusive green future. “India is committed to supporting the world, especially the Global South, in advancing a sustainable future,” stated Shri Pralhad Joshi, India’s Minister of New and Renewable Energy and President of the ISA Assembly. The festival showcases India’s dedication to fostering global energy transitions, involving government, youth, and private sectors.

ISA’s Global Impact and New Initiatives

Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director General of the ISA, lauded the alliance’s pivotal role in promoting solar energy worldwide, highlighting the substantial economic and environmental benefits. Concurrently, the ISA announced negotiations with Africa50 to manage the proposed Africa Solar Facility (ASF), a $200 million initiative aiming to enhance solar investments across Africa by providing tailored financing solutions.

Support from Global Leaders

The festival also featured endorsements from international leaders like Bhutan’s Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, who praised the ISA for its support in developing solar infrastructure in rural areas, and Mauritius’ Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth, who underscored the critical role of solar energy for Small Island Developing States aiming for a 30% solar energy target by 2030.
