EDP’s floating solar project in Alqueva, located in the Beja district, has been awarded as the “most innovative” in sustainable energy by the European Commission. This accolade was presented in Brussels by the European Commissioner for Energy, Kadri Simson, during the commencement of the Sustainable Energy Week—the foremost event in renewable energies.
Innovative Hybrid Technology Integration
The Alqueva project, which has been operational for approximately a year, exemplifies innovation in renewable energy through its unique combination of solar power, hydroelectricity, and battery storage. This hybrid approach not only optimizes energy production but also enhances efficiency and sustainability.
Strategic Impact and Environmental Benefits
Situated on four hectares of the Alqueva dam reservoir, the floating solar power plant comprises 12,000 solar panels. Its advanced mooring system, developed under the EU-funded Fresher project, allows the plant to deliver substantial energy savings and reduce environmental impacts. Notably, the project contributes to supplying 30% of the energy needs of local families, significantly supporting the community’s energy requirements.

EDP’s innovative project was one of three finalists for the sustainable energy awards, which celebrate projects that forge a path for the energy transition.
