China Drives Global Electric Vehicle and Battery Industry Growth

Accelerating Global Electrification

At the 2024 World Power Battery Conference in Yibin, Sichuan, China’s role as a catalyst in the global shift toward electric vehicle (EV) and battery production was spotlighted. Wan Gang, president of the China Association for Science and Technology, noted China’s significant influence, having sold 9.495 million new energy vehicles (NEVs) in the previous year, thus leading the global market.

Leadership in Power Battery Innovation

China’s power battery industry, instrumental in the EV sector, leads with six of the top ten global companies based in China. Despite this, Wan recognized existing challenges in innovation and market applications, calling for international collaboration to address these issues and push for sustainable industrial development.

Commitment to Climate Goals

Miao Wei, from China’s top political advisory body, emphasized the universal responsibility to combat climate change, praising China’s advancements in power batteries for enhancing NEV range and affordability. This progress underpins the NEV industry’s rapid growth, with a notable sales increase of 31.1% in the first seven months of this year.

International Partnerships and Future Directions

The UAE, represented by Ambassador Hussain bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi, acknowledged China as a pivotal partner in transitioning to sustainable energy. The conference underscored the importance of international cooperation in the development of the power battery sector.

Economic and Social Impact

Robin Zeng Yuqun, founder of CATL, highlighted the strategic importance of safety, reliability, and performance in advancing the power battery industry. He proposed using vehicle-to-grid technologies to integrate EVs into the broader energy ecosystem, enhancing grid stability and efficiency.

Project Signings and Economic Impact

The conference concluded with the signing of 137 NEV and power battery projects valued at 95.25 billion yuan, anticipated to produce a total output value of 100 billion yuan and create 20,000 jobs, marking a significant milestone in global sustainable energy advancements.
