Brazil Commits to Tripling Global Renewable Energy by 2030 in Landmark Climate Deal

Brazil officially joins a global pact aimed at tripling renewable energy worldwide by 2030 and phasing out coal, aligning with key nations like the European Union, the US, and the UAE.

Brazil’s Pledge in Global Initiative

Brazil, South America’s largest country, has become one of approximately 100 nations endorsing the “Global Renewables and Energy Efficiency Targets Pledge” to be officially adopted at the United Nation’s COP28 climate talks in Dubai.

Renewable Leadership in Brazil

Brazil, already a renewable energy leader, generates over 80% of its electricity from renewable sources, primarily hydropower, with significant growth in solar and wind energy.

Global Tripling, Domestic Realities

While Brazil cannot domestically triple its already high renewable energy output, it solidifies its commitment to global renewables, according to a Foreign Ministry spokesperson.

Phasing Out Coal and Enhancing Efficiency

The drafted pledge, reviewed by Reuters, commits to phasing down unabated coal power, discontinuing financing for new coal-fired plants. Brazil’s coal contribution is just over 1%.

The agreement also includes a commitment to doubling the global annual rate of energy efficiency improvement to 4% until 2030.
