SCCL Initiates Battery Storage for Solar Power to Enhance Energy Efficiency

Pioneering Energy Storage at SCCL

Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) is set to revolutionize its energy management by implementing a battery energy storage system. This initiative allows the company to store solar power generated during daylight hours and utilize it for operational needs during nighttime, thereby significantly reducing energy wastage and cost.

Advancements in Energy Utilization

Historically, SCCL has faced challenges with excess solar energy, losing approximately 400,000 units of power each month due to the lack of storage capabilities. This new system aims to curtail the monthly energy loss, previously costing the company significantly, especially during peak evening hours when power rates surge.

Strategic Implementation and Financial Outlook

SCCL plans to invest Rs 5 crore in setting up a pilot battery storage unit in the Mandamarri area. This 1 MW storage unit, capable of a 2.5 MW discharge, is designed to effectively balance the supply and demand of energy within the company’s operations. By storing excess daytime solar energy, SCCL can avoid purchasing additional power at higher rates, leading to substantial cost savings.

Future Plans and Industry Impact

The initiative not only supports SCCL’s operations but also contributes to broader grid stability by supplying excess power efficiently. The adoption of this technology is a significant step towards sustainability, aligning with global trends in renewable energy utilization and storage.

Comments from SCCL Leadership

GS Janakiram, SCCL’s General Manager (E&M), Solar Energy, emphasized the strategic move to enhance energy efficiency through the battery storage system. This shift is expected to provide a reliable power supply during nighttime operations and reduce dependency on external power sources during peak tariff periods.
