A recent survey from the University of Maryland’s Program for Public Consultation (PPC) reveals strong bipartisan support for green energy policies in swing states and nationwide. The survey highlights significant approval for maintaining tax credits for electric vehicles (EVs) and clean energy initiatives, alongside opposition to increasing offshore drilling. This survey is the third in a series of Swing Six Issue Surveys, focusing on key policies ahead of the upcoming elections.
Widespread Support for EV Tax Credits
In both swing states and nationally, bipartisan majorities favor maintaining or increasing tax credits for electric vehicles and public charging stations. These tax credits, part of the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act, have garnered support across political lines.
For new EV purchases, tax credits up to $7,500 for individuals earning under $150,000 have seen support ranging from 73% to 77% in swing states and 79% nationally. For used EVs, tax credits of up to $4,000 for those earning under $75,000 are supported by 73% to 78% in swing states and 80% nationally.
Moreover, public charging station installations, which benefit from tax credits covering up to 30% of the cost, are backed by 75% to 81% in swing states and 82% nationally. Interestingly, Republican support for these credits ranges from 57% to 73%, while Democrats’ support is even stronger, between 84% and 94%.
Offshore Drilling Restrictions Gain Favor
The survey also indicates broad opposition to increasing offshore drilling for oil and gas. Large bipartisan majorities in swing states prefer maintaining or decreasing current levels of offshore drilling, with support ranging from 69% to 76%. Nationally, 76% of respondents favor limiting offshore drilling.
Among Republicans, 52% to 63% in swing states support maintaining or reducing offshore drilling, while 79% to 88% of Democrats share this stance. In contrast, only 23% to 30% in swing states, including 36% to 47% of Republicans, favor expanding offshore drilling activities.
Enduring Support for Clean Energy Tax Credits
Tax credits for clean energy production and energy efficiency improvements also receive strong bipartisan backing. Despite concerns over federal revenue impacts, between 76% and 91% of respondents in swing states favor maintaining or increasing these credits, with 83% to 89% expressing similar views nationally.
Support for these clean energy initiatives crosses party lines, with Republican backing ranging from 70% to 87% in swing states. Democrats, showing even stronger support, range from 83% to 97%.
Fuel Efficiency Standards Supported
Fuel efficiency requirements for new cars and light trucks, aimed at increasing miles per gallon by 2027, also enjoy broad support. These regulations are favored by 66% to 71% of respondents in swing states, including 55% to 63% of Republicans and 78% to 85% of Democrats.
The survey’s findings suggest that bipartisan majorities are committed to advancing clean energy policies and reducing carbon emissions, even as debates continue on the future of these initiatives. The results highlight the growing influence of green energy policies in shaping the energy market trends across the United States.
