Trina Solar, a global leader in photovoltaic (PV) and energy storage solutions, is capitalizing on the success of Malaysia’s largest hybrid solar project. The company sees significant growth opportunities for hybrid solar projects across Southeast Asia, a region marked by rapid economic development and rising energy demands.

Hybrid Solar Farms: A Smart Solution for Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia’s growing energy needs often clash with limited land availability. In this context, floating solar technology offers an innovative solution by generating solar energy without occupying valuable land. Additionally, floating solar installations reduce water evaporation from reservoirs and benefit from increased production efficiencies due to the cooling effect of water. However, engineering and construction costs for floating solar are generally higher than traditional ground-mounted systems, making hybrid solar farms an optimal solution for large-scale projects.

A prime example of this approach is the 100MWac hybrid solar farm in Merchang, Malaysia, developed by Cypark Resources Berhad. This groundbreaking project, which became operational on June 9, 2023, combines 35MW of floating solar panels with 65MW of ground-mounted panels. The project is expected to offset 202,024 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually, underscoring the potential of hybrid solar farms in addressing both energy needs and environmental concerns.

Trina Solar’s Role and Vision

Trina Solar played a key role in the success of this project, providing its versatile Vertex modules. These modules, designed for harsh environments, were crucial for the 35MW floating solar segment located on a lake near the sea. The Vertex modules’ dual-glass design ensures durability against high humidity and salt-laden conditions. TÜV Rheinland, an independent global testing leader, recognized the Vertex modules for their superior performance under such challenging coastal conditions.

Elva Wang, Head of Southeast Asia at Trina Solar, highlighted the importance of this project as a model for the region. “This complex project’s success showcases the potential for large-scale hybrid solar projects in Southeast Asia,” Wang stated. “We are eager to continue our collaboration with Cypark Resources and further contribute to Southeast Asia’s renewable energy goals.”
