Australia and Indonesia Strengthen Partnership in Electric Vehicle Supply Chain and Research

Australia and Indonesia have taken significant steps to strengthen their collaboration in the electric vehicle (EV) sector, following the inaugural Senior Officials’ Meeting under the Electric Vehicle Collaboration Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The meeting, held in Canberra on Friday, brought together senior officials from both countries to advance key initiatives outlined in the MoU.

High-Level Engagement

The discussions included prominent figures such as Septian Hario Seto, Indonesia’s Deputy for Investment and Mining Coordination, and Michelle Dowdell, Australia’s Acting Deputy Secretary of the Resources and Strategy Group. Also in attendance was Lauren Bain, First Assistant Secretary at Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The officials focused on critical areas of cooperation, including mapping EV supply chains, improving environmental and social governance, conducting joint scientific research, and fostering business-to-business connections.

Framework for Collaboration

The MoU, signed in 2023 by Indonesia’s State-Owned Enterprises (SOE) Minister Erick Thohir and Australia’s Science and Industry Minister Ed Husic, sets the foundation for deepened cooperation in the EV ecosystem. This collaboration aligns with broader commitments made by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Indonesian President Joko Widodo to enhance ties in clean energy and sustainable development.

Shared Vision for Clean Energy

“Australia and Indonesia are partners in the clean energy transition, and we have a shared interest in growing diverse clean energy supply chains. I’m pleased that we are progressing collaboration on this important agreement,” said Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Penny Williams PSM.

The partnership is expected to bolster the EV supply chain and facilitate joint research efforts, contributing to the global push for a more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation sector. As both nations continue to work closely together, this collaboration could serve as a model for other countries aiming to transition to cleaner energy solutions.
