Internet Data Services and EV Charging Boost Energy Demand
Electricity consumption in 2024 has surged due to the rapid growth of mobile internet, big data, and cloud computing. According to the China Electricity Council, electricity usage for internet data services increased by 33% year-on-year in the first half of the year.
The rising popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) also contributed significantly, with electricity consumption for charging and battery swapping services jumping by 63.7% year-on-year. Jiang Debin, deputy director of the council’s statistics and data center, highlighted this rapid growth.
Projected Growth in Total Electricity Consumption
Total electricity consumption, a key indicator of economic activity, is expected to grow by approximately 6.5% year-on-year for 2024. The combined new installed capacity of grid-connected wind and solar power is projected to reach around 300 million kilowatts. For the first time, the cumulative installed capacity share is anticipated to exceed 40%.
Investment in New Energy Sources
China’s ambitious goals of achieving carbon peak before 2030 and carbon neutrality before 2060 drive continuous investment in developing new energy sources. The power industry remains committed to expanding green energy, aligning with global energy market trends and green energy policies.
Jiang Debin emphasized the importance of these developments in meeting the country’s energy needs while supporting its environmental objectives.
