EV Adoption Could Save $10 Billion and Create Millions of Jobs by 2030

Strategic Shift Towards Electric Vehicles

G20 Sherpa and former NITI Aayog CEO, Amitabh Kant, emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy to accelerate Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption in India. On Tuesday, Kant stated that adopting EVs could save the country $10 billion and create millions of jobs by 2030. This strategic shift aims to position India as a global leader in EV manufacturing.

Focus on Polluted Cities

Kant highlighted the importance of targeting India’s most polluted cities for electrification. He wrote on X, “Fully electrifying India’s 50 most polluted cities by 2030 could save $10 billion and generate millions of jobs.” This initiative aligns with the broader goals of reducing emissions and improving air quality.

Key Steps for Electrification

In his article, Kant outlined the first steps towards achieving this transition. Electrifying two-wheelers, three-wheelers, light commercial vehicles, and buses is crucial. These vehicles significantly contribute to tailpipe emissions and account for over 40% of the nation’s vehicle registrations. Achieving 100% electrification in these cities by 2030 would drastically reduce India’s oil needs.

Addressing Emissions and Air Quality

India faces severe air quality issues, with 42 cities among the top 50 globally for worst air quality, according to the World Air Quality Report 2023. Transportation emissions are a significant factor, contributing 14% of energy-related CO2 emissions and heavily impacting PM2.5, PM10, and NOx levels.

Economic and Market Impact

The EV market in India is currently valued at $5.61 billion in 2023 and is projected to reach $50 billion by 2030. This growth could create at least 5 million direct and up to 50 million indirect jobs. Investing in EVs not only supports green energy policies but also fosters substantial economic development.

By focusing on solar energy investment and sustainable transportation, India can significantly reduce its carbon footprint. This approach ensures a cleaner environment and robust economic growth, paving the way for a sustainable future.
