Ambitious Targets for Energy Efficiency
China’s State Council has announced a comprehensive action plan for energy conservation and carbon reduction for 2024-25. The plan aims to cut energy consumption per unit of GDP by approximately 2.5% and reduce carbon dioxide emissions per unit of GDP by 3.9% in 2024. This initiative is a critical step in China’s efforts to meet its “dual carbon” goals.
Industrial Sector and Renewable Energy Goals
The plan highlights a significant focus on the industrial sector. It aims to reduce energy consumption per unit of added value of industrial enterprises above the designated size by around 3.5% in 2024. Additionally, the proportion of non-fossil energy consumption is set to reach approximately 18.9% in 2024 and 20% in 2025. These targets underscore China’s commitment to shifting towards renewable energy sources and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
Significant Reductions in Coal and Carbon Emissions
The action plan anticipates considerable reductions in coal consumption and carbon emissions. Transformations in key sectors and industries are expected to result in a reduction of approximately 50 million tonnes of standard coal and a decrease in carbon dioxide emissions by around 130 million tonnes in both 2024 and 2025. These measures reflect the country’s dedication to mitigating the impact of climate change.
Commitment to “Dual Carbon” Goals
China has pledged to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. The 2024-25 action plan is an essential part of this long-term strategy. By focusing on energy conservation, increasing the proportion of renewable energy, and reducing carbon emissions, China is taking proactive steps to meet its ambitious environmental targets.
