Increased Power Demand
Punjab’s power consumption surged by approximately 10% in April, reaching 4,595 million units (MU) compared to 4,187 MU in April 2023. This spike in consumption can be attributed to the rising temperatures experienced during the month.
Contributing Factors
Officials from the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) highlight multiple factors contributing to the increased power consumption. Apart from the soaring temperatures, the rise is also attributed to the provision of fresh connections offering 300 free units per month under a government scheme launched by the Bhagwant Mann administration.
Weather Conditions and Consumption
The India Meteorological Department notes a significant increase in both average minimum and maximum temperatures across Punjab in April. Despite the rise in power consumption, officials assure that the situation remains under control, noting that last year’s consumption was relatively lower due to cooler weather conditions.
The trend of increased power demand continued into May, with consumption rising by nearly 10% during the first two days of the month. This surge reflects a broader trend of heightened energy usage amid rising temperatures and increased cooling demands.
Rising Power Demand Figures
April also saw a significant increase in Punjab’s maximum power demand, rising by 24% compared to the previous year. The highest power demand of 10,061 MW was recorded on April 26, marking a notable increase from the 7,421 MW recorded on the same day in 2023, according to data from PSPCL.
As temperatures continue to rise, Punjab braces for continued high power demand, emphasizing the importance of efficient energy management and infrastructure to meet the region’s electricity needs.
