Shettima Unveils Light Up Nigeria Initiative to Tackle Energy Deficit

South East Launch Marks Significant Stride for Power Solution

In a decisive move to combat Nigeria’s energy deficit, Vice President Kashim Shettima launched the Light Up Nigeria Project in Enugu. This initiative, a key focus of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s economic revitalization plan, aims to address the longstanding power supply challenges affecting the nation’s economy.

Empowering Industrial Growth

Shettima inaugurated the 181mw Geometric power plant in Aba, Abia State, targeting enhanced power supply for industrial clusters in the region. The project, a collaboration between the Niger Delta Power Holding Company Limited (NDPHC) and partners, aligns with Tinubu’s economic policies, emphasizing infrastructure development and empowering Nigerians.

The Journey So Far

The Vice President reiterated the project’s significance during the launch, emphasizing its role in stabilizing the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). Having initiated the project in the South West at the Agbara Industrial Cluster in October 2023, Shettima highlighted milestones achieved, including technical studies, transformer procurement, and imminent commissioning of a mobile transmission substation.

Governors Express Support

Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State expressed gratitude for the Vice President’s commitment to the private sector’s growth. Governors Chukwuma Soludo (Anambra), Francis Nwifuru (Ebonyi), and Hope Uzodimma (Imo) also voiced support, emphasizing the project’s critical role in reducing power costs, creating jobs, and driving industrial growth.

Collective Responsibility for Power Solutions

Governor Soludo called for solutions and urged a focus on unlocking gas from the exclusive legislative list. Governor Uzodimma highlighted the need for a comprehensive audit of past power sector investments, emphasizing the urgency of addressing Nigeria’s power challenges.

In conclusion, the Light Up Nigeria Project emerges as a strategic intervention, marking a renewed hope for stable and sustainable power supply in Nigeria’s journey toward economic prosperity.
