Free Solar Plant Installations Starting February 20
In a bold move to enhance solar power generation, the Chandigarh Administration is set to commence the free installation of rooftop solar power plants from February 20. Targeting an additional 40 MWp (megawatt peak) within two years, this initiative falls under the Renewable Energy Services Company (RESCO) model, aiming to make the city greener and more sustainable.
Embracing the RESCO Model for Solar Expansion
With the approval of the Joint Electricity Regulatory Commission (JERC), the city has enlisted four companies for the project. These firms will install grid-connected rooftop solar systems ranging from 1kWp to 500kWp at no upfront cost to homeowners. This strategy not only facilitates clean energy generation but also offers electricity at a reduced rate of Rs 3.23 per unit during the contract period, after which ownership transfers to the consumer free of charge.
Solar Power Milestones and Future Goals
Chandigarh’s ambitious plan involves installing solar plants on 4,000 government residences to generate an estimated 12 MWp. Despite falling short of its 75 MWp target by December last year, with over 61 MWp already installed, the city now aims to reach 90MWp by the end of 2024 and 115 MWp by 2025. Leading in solar power generation among union territories, Chandigarh’s initiative represents a significant step towards achieving energy independence and reducing carbon footprints.
Participation and Installation Process
With over 1,200 applications received, the initiative shows promising community engagement. Residents are encouraged to provide space on their rooftops for the installation, supporting the city’s transition to renewable energy. This program not only offers immediate benefits in terms of cost savings but also contributes to long-term environmental sustainability, setting a precedent for other regions to follow.
