Advancing Renewable Commitments in the Netherlands
Google has recently inked its most extensive offshore power purchase agreement (PPA) with offshore wind projects along the Netherlands’ coast, marking a significant step in the tech giant’s pursuit of greening its power supply and achieving climate targets.
A Giant Leap in Offshore Wind PPA
In collaboration with Crosswind & Ecowende Consortia, joint ventures involving energy giants Shell and Dutch utility Eneco, Google commits to acquiring 478 megawatts (MW) of power from two innovative wind farms. This landmark offshore wind PPA stands as Google’s largest to date, showcasing its dedication to embracing sustainable energy solutions.
Strengthening Clean Energy Solutions Across Europe
While unveiling this major PPA, Google also disclosed additional renewable agreements in Italy, Poland, and Belgium. Although specific financial details remain undisclosed, these initiatives align with Google’s broader mission to operate on carbon-free energy around the clock by 2030.
Pioneering Hourly Matching for Realistic Energy Use
Google’s President in EMEA, Matt Brittin, emphasized, “Our ambition to operate on carbon-free energy around the clock by 2030 requires clean energy solutions in every grid where we operate.” Unlike many companies following annual renewable energy practices, Google aims to match each hour of electricity consumption with an equivalent hour of clean power production. This approach provides a more accurate reflection of companies’ actual energy usage, driving real-time sustainability efforts.
