Apex Clean Energy Unveils 125 MW Wheatsborough Solar Project: A Strategic Collaboration for Environmental Justice

In a groundbreaking move towards environmental justice and sustainable energy solutions, Apex Clean Energy has officially announced its 125 MW Wheatsborough Solar project in Ohio. This initiative is the result of a strategic collaboration with Microsoft and Volt Energy Utility, operating under the innovative Microsoft–Volt Energy Utility Environmental Justice Framework.

Empowering Communities: Microsoft’s Commitment to 100% Renewable Energy

The Wheatsborough project holds significant importance as it aligns with Microsoft’s ambitious goal of supplying 100% of its energy needs through renewable sources. This partnership introduces a pioneering power procurement model, redirecting resources to community-led clean energy and resiliency projects.

Equitable Distribution and Social Impact: The Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)

The Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for Wheatsborough goes beyond traditional contracts. It prioritizes the equitable distribution of clean energy benefits, emphasizing initiatives supporting women and minority leadership, job creation, carbon neutrality, habitat restoration, and end-of-life recycling.

Investing in Environmental Health and Economic Justice: The Sharing the Power Foundation

A noteworthy aspect of this collaboration is the commitment to community and environmental well-being. A percentage of the PPA revenue will be directed to the Sharing the Power Foundation, focusing on environmental health and economic justice in historically underserved urban and rural communities. Wheatsborough Solar’s contributions will extend to community and conservation grants, clean energy workforce development, and the Apex Conservation Grant Program.

Jobs Creation and Sustainable Impact: Wheatsborough’s Construction Phase

Currently in the construction phase, Wheatsborough Solar is expected to come online in the first half of 2025. During this phase, the project will create over 100 local jobs, with at least 75% reserved for Ohio residents. This not only supports economic growth but also reinforces Apex Clean Energy’s commitment to a sustainable and equitable future.

Apex Clean Energy’s Vision for a Renewable Future

Ken Young, CEO of Apex Clean Energy, emphasizes the project’s broader impact, stating, “Developing renewable energy projects that are reliable and sustainable is imperative; prioritizing equitable deployment will further elevate our industry’s overall impact.”

With a dedicated team of over 400 professionals, Apex Clean Energy continues to lead the renewable energy frontier across North America, showcasing a commitment to a sustainable and socially responsible future.
